Just like what you might have read earlier, Microsoft has finally taken the cover off its future mobile operating system – the Windows Phone 8 – at the Windows Phone Summit today. Much of the leaked information of the operating system that we learned back in February were quite spot on such as the support for multi-core processors, sharing the same core as Windows 8, VoIP/Skype integration, Near Field Communication (NFC) capabilities and more.
Unfortunately, there was no announcement on new devices at the
event with the exception of a prototype device made by Nokia that was used
throughout the stage demo. However, Microsoft did unveil a list of hardware
partners that confirmed their commitment to Windows Phone 8. The list includes
Nokia, Huawei, Samsung and HTC as well with
Qualcomm that will continue to be the preferred chipset maker
for Windows Phone family well into the upcoming WP8 era.
Of course, having Nokia in the list is a no-brainer due to their existing
relationship with Microsoft but we are actually surprised to see Samsung in the
list given the fact that they are have been pretty quiet on the Windows Phone
front for quite some time. Huawei is also an interesting addition to the list
since they are known more as an Android manufacturer while we believe that HTC
will most probably continued from where they left off with HTC
Radar.
All in all, we are quite eager to see what all these partners
will bring to the table when Windows Phone 8 officially rolls out to the market
later this year.
